Have You Wondered if an Energy Vampire is Draining You?
Have you ever felt completely drained, depleted, and exhausted after being around a particular person? If so, you may have come across an energy vampire. And they’re more common than you think.
What is an Energy Vampire?
An energy vampire is a person who feeds off your emotional or psychic energy. They are sometimes called Psychic Vampires. Many of them do it unconsciously. They may not even realize they are doing it.
Who are They?
Surprisingly, an energy vampire could even be a friend of yours, or a family member, child, or even a romantic partner.
Sometimes energy vampires are attracted to you because you are a kind and caring person and they seek you out because they feel good around you.
How Can You Know Who They Are?
If you ever feel drained, triggered, or in a different emotional mood after being with a person than you were before being around them, that is a good indication the person has energy vampire traits.
After spending time around an energy vampire you may feel chronically fatigued, depressed, anxious or irritable.
Just hearing about this can make you angry and resentful of such people, but they are usually unaware of what they are doing to you; they just know they like being with you.
They develop their energy vampire traits because of their own wounds and lacks. This characteristic usually develops in childhood because of not feeling safe, secure, and loved.
They may have been hurt physically or emotionally and as a result they are drawn to more healthy people in an attempt to soothe their inner pain. They unconsciously are drawn to you as a possible source of healing them of their suffering.
There is More than One Type of Energy Vampire
It’s vital that you learn how to limit your exposure and set boundaries around these types of people. First, you need to recognize the main types of energy vampires.
1. The Victim or Martyr Energy Vampire
This type of energy vampire is probably the most common. They prey off your guilt. Victims/Martyrs believe that they suffer due to other people abusing or taking advantage of them. As a result they blame, complain, and manipulate people to feel sorry for them, support them, or heal them by trying to make you feel guilty for not doing more to support them.
2. The Sociopath Energy Vampire
This type lacks the ability to feel compassion or caring for others. Some of them are smart enough to mimic compassion, but they do not understand or feel it themselves. This makes them selfishly goal directed and manipulative. They project their demands and expectations on you and when you don’t support them, they can turn against you in an instant. Many of them have engaging personalities and leadership qualities which can engage you, but on the other hand they can undermine you and crush you emotionally.
3. The Intimidating Energy Vampire
Intimidating Vampires have a need to be in the spotlight, be looked up to, and admired. This need stems from deep insecurities and self-doubt. To cover and compensate for this they can be very outgoing and extroverted often to the point of being pushy with their strong opinions.
Don’t fall into the trap of trying to accommodate them, or they will drain you. It is best to avoid energy vampires, but if you must be around them and they project their rigid opinions at you, let them know you don’t agree with them. Otherwise you’ll encourage them and empower them to push more on you.
4. The Dramatic Energy Vampire
Drama Energy Vampires thrive on creating and talking about problems. These are people with deep wounds and project the beliefs they are disliked or not appreciated by others. The negative energy they generate deludes them into believing that by complaining and blaming they are doing something about situations.
Because these people are so negative they can leave you feeling drained and “down” after being around them.
5. The Needy Energy Vampire
Sometimes Energy Vampires can be innocent, helpless, and needy people who genuinely need support, but who come to rely on you too much. It’s wonderful to help those you care about, but it’s also important that you encourage them to be self-sufficient.
You can end up depleting yourself encouraging and supporting these people. Of course, you want to be compassionate and caring, but with these needy people you need to find a balance so you don’t become their source of strength. They need to be encouraged to find their own voice and empower themselves. There are more suggestions in my article How to Defeat Energy Vampires.
